It’s a big month on AFN with heaps of great programming coming your way for Women’s History Month, premiere movies and returning series. Be sure to check out the NCIS 300th episode celebration, and start taking great pictures of your kids for the Month of the Military Child celebration this April!
Working to Form a More Perfect Union: Honoring Women in Public Service and Government is the theme for National Women’s History Month 2016. AFN salutes women in military, public, diplomatic and world community service, further recognizing that women have had an inestimable hand in building our nation. Following are four premiere movies to commemorate the month depicting woman of great strength and character.
He Named Me Malala — PREMIERE

Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai was targeted by the Taliban and severely wounded by a gunshot when returning home on her school bus in Pakistan’s Swat Valley. The then 15-year-old was singled out, along with her father, for advocating for girls’ education, and the attack on her sparked an outcry from supporters around the world. She miraculously survived and is now a leading campaigner for girls’ education globally as co-founder of the Malala Fund.
Still Alice — PREMIERE

A movie based on a fictional novel by Dr. Lisa Genova PhD (neuro-science) that describes a descent into dementia of protagonist professor Alice Howland via early onset Alzheimer’s. Dr. Genova has created a third person narration that offers a unique and talented way to identify with the effects of this disease. Her book has been used to offer insight understanding Alzheimer’s by healthcare students and professionals alike. Stars Julianne Moore, Alec Baldwin and Kristen Stewart.
Woman in Gold — PREMIERE

Based on the true story of Maria Altmann – sixty years after fleeing Vienna she attempts to reclaim family possessions that were seized by the Nazis. Among them is a famous portrait of Maria’s beloved Aunt Adele: Gustave Klimt’s “Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I.” With the help of young lawyer Randy Schoeberg, Maria embarks upon a lengthy legal battle to recover this painting and several others, but it was not easy, for Austria considers them national treasures.Stars Helen Mirren and Ryan Reynolds.
Suffragette — PREMIERE

In early 20th-century Britain, the growing suffragette movement forever changes the life of working wife and mother Maud Watts Galvanized by political activist Emmeline Pankhurst, Watts joins a diverse group of women who fight for equality and the right to vote. Faced with increasing police action, Maud and her dedicated suffragettes must play a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse, risking their jobs, homes, family and lives for a just cause. Stars Carey Mulligan, Anne-Marie Duff, Helena Bonham Carter and Meryl Streep.
Sundays at 4pm CET/JKT on AFN|prime will offer four Commemorative Documentary specials featuring women of distinction and public service. Sunday March 6th starts with Independent Lens: Wilhemina’s War – exposing a family marked by AIDS, and the reality of the leading cause of death for black women in the south. Sunday March 13th will feature American Masters: Althea – the biography of Althea Gibson, the first African American to play and win at Wimbledon and the U.S. Nationals. On Sunday March 20th, Independent Lens: A Ballerina’s Tale – Misty Copeland rises to be the first African American Principal dancer at the American Ballet Theater. On Sunday March 27th, we conclude with Ethel – Ethel Kennedy’s life and an insider’s view into a political dynasty.
Saturdays on AFN|family’s Together Time will celebrate kids’ news pioneer Linda Ellerbee with 2-hour weekly blocks of Nick News episodes at 4pm CET/JKT in March. Sunday Together Time with feature movies with young, strong & righteous female roles for the whole family. Tune in Sundays at 4pm for animated features Frozen, Brave, Epic and Home.

On February 9th, AFN was invited along with a select number of international and domestic TV media outlets to attend the NCIS 300th episode cake cutting party. Located at the NCIS stages in Valencia California, the producers served 300 cupcakes, each decorated with a single episode title. This occasion gave us an opportunity to interview the very talented stars, crew and producers from the show. Here are the highlights from our visit:

2-Night Season Premiere
After a season away from the competition, Grammy-winning singer Christina Aguilera reclaims her red chair in season 10, alongside the three other celebrity musician coaches: hip-hop artist Pharrell Williams, pop star Adam Levine and country music star Blake Shelton. Each coach selects contestants for their teams during the blind auditions, and can steal contestants during the battle rounds, which determine the strongest vocalists.

House of Cards

Season 4 will open with Frank Underwood mired deeply in his 2016 presidential campaign. Back in December, Kevin Spacey’s character “hijacked” the Republican Presidential debate and aired his own political ad, which bore a resemblance to a campaign ad from yesteryear, the “Morning in America” ad for Ronald Reagan from 1984. We know this season is going to be good, because the series has already been renewed for season 5!

The fall finale ended with Lucious losing his CEO position at Empire Entertainment to Camilla Marks (Naomi Campbell), thanks to Hakeem’s betrayal. Besides, Jamal and Lucious are both nominated for the song of the year category at the fictional American Sound Awards. An unidentified person pushes Rhonda Lyon down the stairs, endangering the lives of Andre’s wife and their unborn baby. Fans of the show know that Lucious will go to any length to get his company back and get his revenge on those who wronged him.

Month of the Military Child is coming in April!
Sharing pictures of your kids on AFN for Month of the Military Child has become a cherished yearly tradition. Starting mid-March we will be calling for submissions from you for the April commemoration. Also as part of the tribute we will be additionally asking you to participate in the “Mil Kids Pick”, where you can vote on Youth, Pre-teen and Tween television shows to marathon in April. Please take a moment and vote for your kids’ favorites.
